There is less than a week left for the election, the political parties have begun a full-fledged election campaign in both the constituencies. These are the same areas where a tense situation was faced by government forces due to violence triggered by the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani last year.
Two Lok Sabha seats, Anantnag and Srinagar, have fallen empty due to different reasons. Anantnag fell vacant when Mehbooba Mufti resigned to take over as the post of chief minister of the state. She was throned as CM after her father’s, Mufti Sayeed, death. The other seat fell empty after the resignation of former Member of Parliament, Tariq Karra because of violence in the valley. Karra belonged to Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). The by-polls had to be delayed last year because of the same unrestful situation faced by people of state.
National Conference Party (NCP) has announced to field Farooq Abdullah, from Srinagar constituency. Farooq Abdullah is the former Chief Minister of J&K. Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (PDP) has fielded Nazir Khan for the Srinagar seat. On the other hand Congress’ J&K chief, Mir will be contesting from Anantnag seat against Tassaduq Hussain. Hussain is the brother of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. It has always been a safe seat for the Mufti family.
